Pater Noster

Introduction

The first prayer is the Our Father, the perfect prayer taught to us by Jesus Himself. Mt 6:9-13 The Didache (DID-ah-Kay), a recently-discovered book of letters from the apostles to the churches, asks Catholics to recite it three times each day. The Church made it part of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass during the latter part of the fourth century, when it was recited after the breaking of the bread. After St. Augustine proposed moving it to just before the breaking of the bread, Pope St. Gregory the Great agreed, and it has been there ever since. It is here offered additionally in Hebrew transliteration because Jesus gave it in Hebrew or Aramaic.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
