Hail Mary

The Ave Maria is the most basic of the Marian prayers. The first part is Scriptural, from St. Luke’s Gospel, joining the words of the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation Lk 1:28 with Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary at the Visitation Lk 1:42. These are respectively the Rosary’s first and second joyful mysteries. The second part is intercessory; it was included in the reformed breviary authorized by Pope St. Pius V in 1568.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
